Dear Dr. Beverlee,

For the past year I have been searching for a religion that truly makes me happy and contented with myself. When I was younger I was Christian but I didn't go to church or read the bible. I just celebrated Christmas and prayed to god and Jesus Christ. But I never felt content, I felt like I wanted something more... something special. So I tried Wicca, but I couldn't follow all the rituals and it just didn't give me what I needed. I read about Buddhism, and many other religions online, but I am so confused. I find myself thinking of god and Jesus when I am scared, and I pray to them when I am scared or uncomfortable, but then I always go back to wanting to try tarot cards, levitating etc. I also feel that tarot etc. goes against what god teaches. So basically I am
Finding it hard to drop my Christian teachings, and during the day I really want more spiritually, but then at night when I get scared I pray to god and promise not to mess around with new age stuff anymore. I know you aren't really the right person to ask but I really need help!!!

Dear Spiritually Confused:

People are capable of having personal spiritual beliefs that sustain them during good as well as difficult times. Our spirit can live with a desire and intention to act with love, compassion, kindness, and forgiveness. All of these positive acts, and many more, are within the self: Some we are taught from a very early age, some we seek out as we grow older and wiser.

The basic idea of all religions and new age spirituality is very similar – love and compassion is the heart of it all.

The Yin: You do not need to end your Christian beliefs since they give you some strong direction to love and honor yourself and others. You may also have a stronger foundation upon which to build your life. Adding new spiritual tools can create a richer life and do not take away anything from your basic, original religious belief.

Think of this metaphor: Although you may travel a main road, you can also explore some beautiful side lanes and spend whatever time you wish enjoying everything around you. If the side lane becomes more important and meaningful you may decide to stay there indefinitely. Just know that asking questions and exploring new beliefs is not a reason to feel guilty or fearful. Most adults question their life and beliefs at one point or another. The answers they discover may greatly enrich their life. Go for it and check out anything that interests you.

The Yang: Perhaps being happy and content is as simple as accepting the person you are at every point in your life. You do not need to be any one thing that is unchanged and lasts forever. So accept who you are and love and honor this person. When you make a decision to do this, your confusion will likely vanish.

Feel free to write again.
